I went there a few times as a youngin' after ball games and boy scout meetings. Great memories! Mukwonago is such a different town then it was back then!

I spent a week in Mukwonago back in 1986 on a youth group leadership retreat. One of the things I remember is going to Charlie's and getting a delicious pizza and probably the best milkshake I had ever had. I can't vouch for the scratch n' sniff stickers, but I do seem to recall the bucket o' ice cream. Funny story: Fast forward 25 years, and I had a customer looking for a particular product. I researched it, and found the manufacturer. After contacting them and exchanging info via email, I noticed that they were in Mukwonago. I sent a reply asking if Charlie's was still around. They repleid that it was not, and then asked me if I was from Wisconsin. I got a chuckle out of that and explained why I had been there.

I ave never had any luck with strawberries...but then again, I have never tried them. Last year, there were cucumbers coming out of our ears. Hopefully it will be the same situation this year.

Wow that's a pretty amazing result for such a modest operation. Even though I'm in the industry, I often forget how powerful fundraising campaigns can be once they get going.

Calgary's not quite as out of the loop as Alaska, but the weather just might be worse ;) But no place seems as remote these days, thanks to the Internet.

Thank you so much for the comment, and for visiting this "vintage" post.

As far as I had contact with her, she didn't seem to be a bitter woman at all, but rather someone who loved life and her family.

You are right - sometimes you meet an older person and you think its great that they "don't give a darn" anymore about what people think, but my Grandmother used to say (and still says), people who are grumpy old people were grumpy young people. People who are extremely outspoken when they were young are the older people who just let it all out later in life. For the most part anyways.
